I suppose anti-dice-game people might not be persuaded either, but this occupies similar territory to Castles of Burgundy insofar as it really doesn’t feel like the rolls of the dice are what ultimately determine the outcome. They’re a central aspect of the game, yet somehow it’s your strategic decisions, not the exact numbers you get, that take center stage in how the game plays out. In the base game, there are 6 objectives and one is dealt to each player at the start of the game. At the end of the game, you score not only for your objective but also for everyone else’s objectives. So you spend the game trying to work out who has got which objective. And also accusing people of having certain objectives. This happens from turn one. As soon as the first player places a cube on the cathedral, someone shouts the phrase “Well, they’ve obviously got the cathedral objective.” This is followed by strenuous denials. There are several types of actions you can take. The first type of action is to combat the event cards. Troyes is delightful, combining dice into a meaty euro game. Lately, dice have made their way into a variety of fantastic euro games: The Castles of Burgundy, Grand Austria Hotel, and Roll for the Galaxy amongst others. Troyes is better than these games. The decision space and variety of mechanisms in the game provide an intersection of tactical brilliance and long-term depth that none of these other games provide. During the remainder of this round, you can't take any more actions, but each time the turn comes around to you, another denier is added to your district. It doubles the amount of activity cards that you can visit, adds in the purple die, more objectives, plus other modules too. It comes highly recommended. The key to the latter (cutthroat) is purchasing dice. One way to create efficiency is to use the maximum number of dice per turn (3). But you’re rarely going to be able to do this with only your own dice, and the cost of purchasing dice goes up if it’s being added to a larger pool. So what this ends up creating is an environment where you will absolutely want to steal dice from under your opponents (giving them a fee, granted) but only when it will really hurt them or help you.
