About this deal

The Midnight Guardians is a beautiful story of love and friendship, hope and kindness—and finding light in the darkness. I absolutely loved it! Imagine a delicious milkshake made with the blended ingredients of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Lord of the Rings, Five Children on the Western Front, and a special pinch of additional magic. There you have The Midnight Guardians. Drily humorous at times, utterly terrifying at others, this tale will whisk you away to another time that is both instantly recognisable and completely alien. The Midnight Guardians is a classic in the making, and I loved every second of it. - The School Librarian Spectacular. A story of real and rare power - The Midnight Guardians is one of the best books I've read in years." Kiran Millwood Hargrave With the spirit of Narnia, but a heart of its own. The Midnight Guardians is totally enchanting. I gobbled up every word.\" Aisha Bushby I inhaled this wonderful book in one sitting ... humour, beautiful writing, heartbreak, hope, and a fat badger in a waistcoat. I'll be recommending it to everyone.\" Katya Balen

The King of Rogues has to be my favourite character. He is everything I look for in a character as he is brave, a master knight and has a constant comedic quarrel with many characters as well as making all the other characters call him just Rogue which creates some comedic arguments.Ever wanted to write your own children’s adventure book? Shortlisted for the Books for Older Readers category, Children's Book Awards 2022 | Shortlisted for the Costa Children's Book Award 2021 This was one of the best books I have ever read. The plot and the characters were really interesting. I like the book because it made me think and wonder what was going to happen. It also had some really heartwarming parts and was overall a great read. One of my favorite books I have read so far and I would recommend to my friends. Brilliant! The Midnight Guardians is the perfect blend of humour, adventure and emotion. Simply beautiful." Lisa Thompson Thirdly, even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, you’d still enjoy this book still because Christmas is not the main focus. It’s rather a setting for time and more of like a culture rather than a religious matter. The characters are relatable, even the imaginary friends have traits you see in a lot of people. Col, although just a young boy is wise beyond his years, I think a lot of children who were living through the war were, they had to be resourceful, learn to live with death and destruction as well as being separated from their families.I think this is Ross Montgomery's best book yet: an adventure across WWII wintry Britain with a Kindertransportee, a boy dressed in shorts and his three imaginary friends. Funny, thrilling, moving ... everything that is brilliant about children's literature . A triumph." Sophie Anderson There are shades of The Box of Delights in its Christmas-cosy-deadly-danger atmosphere throughout, although Montgomery goes one step further than Masefield; while he may bring in the characters of folklore, we always feel we are on unstable ground as though the fantasy might fall to pieces at any moment and launch us headlong, irreversibly, into the terrors of war and real life. Montgomery never shies from the sharpness of bald truth, and for this, he is an author-for-children who should be highly regarded: no sugar-coated endings here (or elsewhere, for that matter), just honesty.

Rather than learn anything new from this book, it confirmed what I knew already about the war, but I did love that nearly every chapter there would be a small news article. I loved that it was in the era of WW2 because that made Rose’s Rescue and the plot and setting of the whole book comprehendible, yet amazing. Embark on a mythic, comic, classic adventure with the finest fellowship since Frodo set a hairy foot beyond the Shire.” David Solomons I really enjoyed the Guardians. I found Pendlebury, the flying tiger to be hilariously bad at joke telling, Mr Noakes an interesting badger in a tuxedo and the King of Rogues who made sure you had to call him King of Rogues not just Rogues, and who always had a funny complaint. With the spirit of Narnia, but a heart of its own. The Midnight Guardians is totally enchanting . I gobbled up every word.” Aisha Bushby One aspect which I really like about this book is that there was a lot of imagination that went into this book and a lot of creativity as well as having lots of facts and history about World War 2. (I liked how there was a balance between facts about WW2 but I also liked how there was a storyline to it too.)I also loved how they took creatures we thought were beautiful and pure, such as fairies, transformed into Butter-stealing disgusting flying rat monsters. I 100% recommend this book to other pupils that are fond of adventure and originality. Beautiful... A magical, big-hearted adventure full of wit and warmth. One of the best children's books I've read for ages. - Anna James
