It's true that there is no ground breaking version of a contemporary song, no fresh triumph like ''The Mercy Seat'' or ''Hurt''. If you have big fingers be careful because it can be foolishly riped or damaged since the "accordion" jackets to insert the discs don't "spread" or open as wide as you may think, so take this in consideration. The Unearthed vinyl box features a pair of cloth-bound books housed in an LP-sized black cloth slipcase.

With each track being essential listening, there is refreshingly no filler material to pad out the collection. Also, maybe the light scuff may have been occured in the transport, the disc can move in the sleeve since it's not enough tight. One book holds the nine vinyl records while the other is a 60-page coffee table book which contains Sylvie Simmons’ sleeve notes, Cash and Rubin’s comments on every track and plenty of photos from the recording sessions. But even if I had also purchased My Mother's Hymn Book as a standalone, the three other CDs are more than worth the money. The quality of these outtakes are just as good as the material that was originally released on the American Recording albums. Through their inconsistencies and quirks (and, more often than not, brilliance), they shed light on how Cash's final records were shaped, edited and produced. In terms of the set itself my only complaint is the unnecessary 5th disc featuring previously released tracks from the first 4 American CDs (except for "Thirteen" which is actually a longer alternate take or edit than the version previously released).

To celebrate the Man in Black’s enduring and influential legacy, American Recordings and UMe have reconfigured this monolithic collection for its first-ever vinyl release, spreading Unearthed’s 79 songs over nine high-quality 180-gram vinyl LPs while expanding the original box's distinctive packaging for the long-playing format. The Johnny Cash Unearthed box set was originally issued on CD in 2003, just two months after Cash’s death. Knowing that Rubin was holding back tracks for V and VI, so the inclusion of further outtakes was unlikely, I would have been more than pleased for Disc 5 to have featured the complete Viper Room show from which two tracks from American I were taken.The deluxe packaging includes a 104-page, cloth-bound book; never-before-seen photographs; and Cash's personal commentary on every song in the box. The set was originally planned to celebrate Cash and Rubin's decade of recording together, and the final mixes had been sent to Cash, but he passed away before receiving them. Unearthed was originally released as a CD box set by producer Rick Rubin’s American Recordings in November 2003, two months after the country superstar’s passing. Tracks 6, 9 and 10 were previously recorded for Hymns from the Heart (1962); tracks 5, 11, 14 and 15 were previously recorded for Sings Precious Memories (1975); and track 7 was recorded in concert for The Survivors Live (1982).

Several other songs, such as track 13, had been performed by Cash on TV or live in concert, but formal studio recordings had not yet been issued until now. For example, there's an incredible version of The Devil's Right Hand, a song recorded by the Highwaymen in the mid-90s, but Cash's sparse version, accompanied only by an electric guitar, is by far the superior performance. In other Cash news, and at the other end of his career, Charly have recently reissue a vinyl edition of The Sun Records Years Greatest Hits.

One book holds the nine LPs, while the other is a gorgeous 60-page coffee table book that incorporates Sylvie Simmons' extensive liner notes, drawn from five days of interviews at Cash's home in Tennessee, as well as Cash and Rubin's comments on every song on the set, plus a copious selection of photographs from the recording sessions, including some of the last photos ever taken of Cash. Over the course of five mesmerising CDs, Unearthed shows us just how Johnny Cash's now-legendary handful of recordings for American Records came to be.

There are delights throughout: a towering performance of Tom Waits' ''Down There By The Train'', and a spine tingling take on Neil Young's ''Heart of Gold''. A really nice box set, but it's a shame that they really missed the care about the records production. In addition to the 4 other albums of American Recordings and the many fine collections of his earlier material, Unearthed is a treasure trove for devotees and new acolytes alike.
